3.COURSE DESCRIPTION

Art History: It is a survey of the major period styles of Western European art, from prehistoric times till the twentieth century. Various different cultures and time periods will be studied by through brief examination of the techniques of visual analysis. It includes background information concerning development of styles and movements in art. Major artists and their work will be discussed and critiqued, concerning the technique, form and content. Students will be responsible for preparing lectures and discussions either individually or in group. There will be slides, and gallery and museum visits.

Visual Literacy: Visual literacy is the ability to interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in the form of an image. The theory and forms of visual communications and the elements (such as color, shape, texture, scale and motion), composition and analysis techniques will be taught in this course. Since the course involves a hands-on approach to visual literacy, students will experience and develop competencies in the delivery of information by an in-depth look through the modality of the image

Understanding Colours: This course explores the physical and psychological effects of light and colour, colour interaction, relationships and colour perception as the basic principles regarding the use of color in the visual arts through the reference of Johannes Itten’s, The Art of Colour.. Through exercises, students will investigate the science of colour and the ways in which this visual tool can be used to manipulate viewer responses.

Art Materials: This course introduces students to various art media and materials used by visual arts artists. It presents a vast number of expressive ideas, concepts and procedures that occur in the studio setting. Students will learn the basic techniques and skills associated with each art medium as a starting point for any student interested in the arts.

Perspective: This course introduces students to the interactions, interrelations, and analogies between mathematics and arts. The course will discuss a wide range of mathematical topics such as numbers, proportions and numeric sequences, exploring the many places where the fields of mathematics and the visual arts intersect. Students will utilize various media in order to organize design elements with symmetry operations, building effective patterns.

Keys to Drawing: The art of drawing is a combination of hand, eyes and mind. This course is basically for students who don’t have any background in drawing but have the skills to draw. This gives them an introduction to how to draw, how to measure and to the rules of shapes. It gives them the best keys for developing the skills in drawing. It also gives them a brief introduction about art materials used in drawing. Also, Light & Shadow introduces us to the wonderful feature of illusion of light. It helps a great deal to know that light and shadow behave in a logical and consistent pattern. Once we understand this, we have the measure of illusion. This course helps the student in learning how to model forms realistically through the use of light-shadow pattern. The course also discusses shape and the role of light and shadow shapes in strengthening and enriching the design quality of a drawing

Pencil and Graphite: Graphite pencils vary from very hard to very soft, and an artist can build up a range of tones in a drawing by exploiting these physical differences. A range of tones can be achieved by using one pencil, but this involves altering the pressure as you work from light to dark. This method is mainly used for finished pencil drawing rather than quick studies or under drawings. The range of pencil you choose will depend on the subject and how you wish to interpret it.

Charcoal and Conte: Charcoal is one of the fastest media and is one of the least inhibiting media. It can produce bold and fluid lines, and a great host of textures as well as subtle gradations for shadings. Also, Conte crayon is a hard pencil made of admixture of graphite and clay that can be varied for different degrees of hardness. Conte is a black, red or brown chalk. Conte is an attractive and versatile medium allowing for both line and tone work.

Scratchboard-Pen-Brush and Ink: Scratchboard is another innovative technique of drawing using minimalistic materials. Scratchboard is a technique where drawings are created using sharp knives and tools for etching into a thin layer of white China clay that is coated with black ink. Scratchboard can also be made with several layers of multi-colored clay. Scratchboard has been found to be one of the best art techniques for its immediacy and graphic qualities. Also, Pen and ink is one of the oldest of all the drawing media. This course helps you discover which type of pen suits you best by trying them out. There are various practical considerations related to the subject matter of the drawing and the effect one wants to achieve. Pens made of different substances give different strokes. The most common type of drawing ink is shellac based ink. Drawing with brushes takes a good deal of practice. The essence of this method of drawing with a brush is controlled spontaneity which is achieved with practice.

Figure Drawing: This course introduces the students to human anatomy, expressive qualities of the human life in a variety of ways and with using different materials. Drawing life proportions can be applied to portraiture, cartooning, illustration, and other fields that use depictions of the human form. Drawing life proportions can be done very simply as in gesture drawing or in more detail using charcoal, pencil, etc. Since the purpose of drawing life proportions is to learn to draw humans of all kinds, models of all ages, shapes, and ethnicities are usually sought.

Mixed Media: Mixed Media Drawings were at one time mainly restricted to traditional techniques. After the artists continued to experiment and push out the boundaries, new and exciting possibilities have begun to emerge. Students can create new picture by combination of different materials. Sometimes it can be even the most mundane of objects which are artistically and creatively used to produce a wonderful piece of art.

Creative Collage: Collage art work is a fascinating composition of different materials with various colours. It is a design created by adhering different materials to a surface and its result can be a three dimensional art work also. This process was widely used by cubist artists and is a popular technique in the contemporary art. It was possibly exploited most notably by Henri Matisse in his wonderful series of abstract and figurative works using cutout paper shapes in brilliant colors. Different techniques of collage are becoming popular and artists are always experimenting with different materials

Colour Pencil: Pencil form and wide variety of colors allows for great creative expression and ease and cleanliness of use. Colored pencil is basically a line medium but solid color and considerable depth of tone can be achieved by overlaying linear marks, using traditional hatching, crosshatching and shading methods. It is possible to some extent to work light over dark with colored pencils. Any type of drawing paper can be used and smooth paper is the most popular choice. For quick sketches, ordinary paper provides an excellent surface.

Pastel (Soft, Oil): Soft pastels are best for broad, painterly effects made with the side of the stick, allowing you to exploit both line and soft color areas. Very light blender is used for soft pastels which are almost pure pigment. Dense and open hatching strokes are best achieved with soft pastel. The course gives insight into different kinds of strokes using pastels. In oil pastels, the pigment is bound with oil giving a dense and greasy texture. The choice of colors is slightly restricted but it is one of the best medium to work since it doesn’t require fixing. Layers of color can be built up with oil pastel in the same way as for soft past pastels and colored pencils. Oil pastel colors can’t be blended by rubbing with a finger but blended effect can be achieved by working one color over into another with a fairly heavy pressure.

Water Colour: Watercolor painting is quite demanding since water is an active and complex partner in the watercolor painting process, changing both the absorbency and shape of the paper when it is wet and the outlines and appearance of the paint as it dries. The difficulty in watercolor painting is almost entirely in learning how to anticipate and leverage the behavior of water. This course will introduce the student to different techniques of watercolor painting such as wet in wet, dry brush, washes and glazes, etc., and teach them in using different kind of papers, brushes and other tools.

Oil and Acrylic Painting (I-V for each): For each medium of Oil and Acrylic, this course during 3 levels for each, is including Classical and Modern paintings. Classical painting introduces the paintings, artists and techniques that have created time honored tradition within classical painting from the Renaissance to the Impressionist period, including Leonardo Da Vinci, Caravaggio and Degas. Students will develop skills in rendering accurate value relationships, “true to life form”, color, proportion, scrambling, glazing, painting “alla prima”, control and texture. The course places emphasis on utilization of value, hue and intensity to convey a sense of light and form. Students will develop critical thinking when engaging in problems and issues in painting. Also, Modern painting  explores the historical sources of the abstract painting including both modern and post-modern variations that has been resulted from desire to express a spiritual reality from the representational world to a non-objective one. The course will experiment with techniques and language by combining paint and the formal elements of design, including line, shape, form and color. Through this course, students will be able to develop their creative painting skills by creating a piece of art that reflect what they think, feel and imagine.

2D Design: Design will focus on the fundamental principles of visual expression and communication in the form of two-dimensional design. Students will learn to organize visual images by understanding visual elements, line, shape, tone, texture and volume. Also they will examine various design principles such as repetition, variety and movement, in order to gain a competence in two-dimension design of creative and intelligent imagery

3D Design: This course introduces students to basic design principles and elements in developing 3D compositions. Students will work with modular theories, materials and ideas as well as intuitive responses in order to manipulate various materials in the three-dimensional design world. Projects that cover the importance of line, plane and mass are used to heighten the students’ perceptions of forms in space.

Typography: This course will explore the foundation of letter styling in both calligraphy and typography with an insight into its historical background, technical and aesthetic issues and execution of lettering for reproduction. Students will investigate the basic aspects of letterform through a variety of projects and exercises. The computer is employed to introduce the student to the basic principles of typographic design and typesetting. Typography is the design and use of typefaces as a means of visual communication. The art and practice of typography began with the invention of moveable type and the printing press. The unique course of Islamic Typography at Lotus is a combination of Art subjects and Graphic subjects with focusing on history of Sacred Arts and developing stages of scripts and oriental/traditional arts in Islamic culture and countries.
